In 2010, the Florida State University Clearinghouse on Supervised Visitation identified an opportunity to help supervised visitation programs broaden their reach to increase economic opportunities and improve Child Support Enforcement (CSE) outcomes for client families. Florida’s wide array of supervised visitation programs are housed in faith-based groups, are part of larger umbrella social services organizations, or operate as non-profit 501(C)(3) programs. All of Florida’s supervised visitation programs are part of the coordinated community response to child endangerment.
The National Prevention Toolkit on Officer-Involved Domestic Violence is being welcomed by states across the country! Since the formal launch on June 20th, the Mississippi Association of Chiefs of Police and the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police have welcomed the Institute to their Annual Conferences to speak about Toolkit. This online training opportunity is available to criminal justice officers completely FREE. We are grateful for the warm receptions by officers across the country!
The Institute has compiled a list (and summary of) recent academic journal articles related to LGBT topics. Some of the topics include Gay Specific, Lesbian Specific, Barriers to Services, Medical Screening, Police Involvement, and much more. This annotated bibliography provides a short summary of the each article listed as well as the reference for finding the article for more detailed readings.
The Institute for Family Violence Studies received a Prudential Davis Productivity Award for the fourth straight year for its work on the Law Enforcement Families Partnership. The Institute developed a free online training for criminal justice officers to help prevent domestic violence within their homes. This year Karen Oehme, Institute Director, Zachary Summerlin, Program Coordinator, and Suzanne Harrison, Associate Professor at the FSU College of Medicine, were honored for their work on the Law Enforcement Families Partnership in 2012.
The Walk in My Shoes Rally to End Sexual Abuse arrives in Tallahassee on April 23rd. Walk the final mile to the Old Capitol with Lauren Book, the founder of Lauren’s Kids, as she completes her 1,500 mile trek across the state of Florida to raise awareness about sexual abuse, advocate for abuse prevention and help survivors find their voice. Lauren is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and started Lauren’s Kids to help others who have experienced sexual abuse.

The Leon County Domestic Violence Fatality Review Team recently concluded its first year of meetings. This team works to identify gaps and strategies to improve and increase interventions to protect victims and children, hold batterers accountable, and prevent domestic violence homicides in Leon County. One of the key outputs from the Team during 2012 was the development and printing of a Landlord Brochure. This handout provides landlords crucial information about helping tenants who may be victims of domestic violence.
The Leon County Domestic Violence Fatality Review Team is a group of citizens committed to reducing domestic violence in our community. The work of fatality review teams helps identify systemic gaps and strategies to improve and increase interventions to protect victims and children, hold batterers accountable, and prevent domestic violence homicides, in accordance with Florida Statute 741.316. Members of this include many local law enforcement officers, victim advocates, lawyers, business leaders, physicians, and other committed citizens who volunteer their time.
