Tuesday, October 30th, the FSU Women’s Center is hosting a panel discussion and seminar for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This event will be held in the FSU Student Union, Room 314 at 7:00pm.
The Institute develops LGBTQ Resources for teens and families. Below you will find a LGBTQ flyer for parents of teens. It provides a list of ways to support your child with resource links for parents and teens on the back. If you are interested in receiving any of these flyers please contact the Institute and we will send you hard copies.
The College of Social Work has an outstanding group of Graduate Assistants this fall. The Institute is very fortunate that some of these students have offered a helping hand on a few of the many projects we have. The Institute is a member of the National Partnership to End Interpersonal Violence Across the Lifespan (NPEIV). This mission of NPEIV is “to make the prevention of interpersonal violence a national priority and to encourage healthy relationships by linking science, practice, policy, and advocacy.” Check out the website at http://www.uncg.edu/psy/npeiv/.
Executives from the Verizon Foundation present a check for $140,000 to the Institute for Family Violence Studies to create a National Prevention Toolkit on Officer-Involved Domestic Violence. The Toolkit will be completed in 2013.
The Institute for Family Violence Studies is fortunate to have an outstanding group of student interns this summer. The team consists of Katie Bissell, Jessica Gambill, Mamie Harper, Ember Maselli, Stephanie Pollack, and Saadia Smith. Each of these talented individuals brings a unique skill set to the Institute. They are all active contributors on each of the projects the Institute has.
For the third consecutive year, the Law Enforcement Families Partnership (LEFP) will receive recognition from the Davis-Productivity Awards sponsored by Florida TaxWatch. Since 1989, the Davis Productivity Award program has publicly recognized and rewarded state employees and groups whose work significantly and measurably increases productivity and promotes innovation and saves money for Florida taxpayers and businesses. The LEFP has been honored for three consecutive years for providing criminal justice officers access to free online domestic violence prevention training.
The Alliance for Faith-based Efforts to End Domestic Violence is partnering with Leon (FL) County’s Domestic Violence Coordinating Council to co-sponsor a local educational summit for religious leaders. This event will bring religious leaders and interested community members together to discuss the religious response to domestic violence. One of the goals of this event is to engage community leaders and religious leaders in a collaborative effort that seeks ways to help victims of domestic violence in a safe and respectful manner.
When President Barron came to tour the College of Social Work, he had the opportunity to stop and visit with some of the graduate students who work with the Institute. Recent graduates, Annelise Martin, Rachyl Smith, and Taylor Sissun, had the opportunity to engage President Barron in a presentation that highlighted research, community service projects, and professional writing samples they had produced.
